Background Java has
become the defacto programming
environment for a broad range of
embedded applications. With the release
of Java SE 7, developers are able to
utilize the same functionality for
deployment on ARM powered hardware at
the same time as features become
available for the PC platform. To take
advantage of this, there needs to be a
comprehensive, low cost, easy to use
development platform which avoids the
need for cross compilation etc.
System Overview Pactron’s Java
ARM Development Environment (JADE)
embedded Java 7 system, is a fully
featured platform for developing
embedded applications in Java SE
Embedded with BDB. The fan
less system has a diverse set ports
allowing for the integration of a broad
range of external devices used in
embedded applications. The platform also
incorporates the standard set
input/output ports associated with
traditional x86 based systems, such as
USB 2.0, SD CARD, Gigabit Ethernet,
audio input/output, SATA and serial
ports. At the heart of the
JADE platform is a 2.0GHz ARM processor
and DVI video output. A 1.2GHz ARM
processor with VGA output is also
available. The boot subsystem
for the JADE platform can be SATA (HDD/SSD),
SD CARD or internal NAND memory. The
system is pre installed with the Linux
file system, tool chain, compilers and
loaders. In the identical way to the
approach used on an x86 based Linux
system, optional components can be
installed using the Debian dpkg
facility. Development can be executed
using the larger, internal HDD/SSD disk
with a full Linux desktop environment.
The operating system and applications
can be injected into the NAND memory,
following the operating instructions
supplied with the kit, that indicate how
to reboot and test the system in the
mode that reflects a deployed production
environment. If the NAND test
OS and applications do not perform as
required, the system can be rebooted
back to the good HDD/SSD image, in a way
similar to a “Rescue Mode”.
The exposed PCI-E connector allows for
integration of additional hardware
elements not supported in the standard
JADE platform. Using this
system allows developers to quickly
complete initial software development.
Pactron offers additional turnkey
hardware and software services to
design, develop and manufacture (in the
USA, both test- and full production
quantities) optimized production
hardware. In summary, the
JADE system is a simple and easy to user
environment for developers of a variety
of embedded applications including
Industrial Automation, Healthcare, Smart
Grid, Retail, Security and Surveillance
that need “embedded PC” type
functionality at dramatically lower
cost, footprint and power points.
